The Rainforest Gallery in Warburton offers an immersive journey into one of Victoria’s lush temperate rainforests. Just a short drive from Melbourne, this captivating destination combines serene natural beauty with an elevated Warburton treetop walk, perfect for a day of exploration and relaxation.
Getting to the Rainforest Gallery
By Car: The most straightforward route is by car. Take the Eastern Freeway (M3) out of Melbourne, merging onto the Maroondah Highway (B300) towards Lilydale. From there, follow signs towards Warburton and turn onto Donna Buang Road. The drive takes around 90 minutes, with ample parking available at the Rainforest Gallery Warburton car park.
Public Transport: While public transport can get you close to Warburton, reaching the gallery directly is difficult. Take the Lilydale line from Melbourne to Lilydale Station, then catch the 683 bus towards Warburton. From Warburton town centre, a short taxi or rideshare will take you to the gallery. I wouldn’t recommend trying to walk as the road there is very winding and dangerous with cars.

What to Do at the Rainforest Gallery
Warburton Treetop Walk: The Rainforest Gallery treetop walk is a stunning 40m elevated walkway suspended over the rainforest floor. The path takes you right up into the canopy, allowing you to experience the lush scenery from an awe-inspiring perspective. The treetop walk includes interpretive signs that share insights into the unique ecosystem of the Yarra Ranges. There are a few viewing platforms on the suspended walkway which provide great photo ops!

Rainforest Walk and Viewing Platform: After taking in the views from the treetop walk, head down the steps to explore the Rainforest Gallery at ground level. The boardwalk meanders through the dense forest, offering close views of moss-covered ferns, ancient trees and crystal-clear creeks. The atmosphere here is quiet and refreshing, making it a beautiful spot for a leisurely stroll.

Photography: With its stunning variety of flora and misty ambiance, the Rainforest Gallery Warburton is a photographer’s dream. Early morning or late afternoon provides ideal lighting for capturing the towering trees and rich greenery.
Picnic Areas: Although the gallery itself doesn’t offer picnic facilities, nearby Warburton is home to scenic spots along the Yarra River where you can enjoy a packed lunch or pick up takeaway from one of the town’s local cafes. There’s a bakery in town called the Warburton Bakery that does amazing pies! I recommend picking one up (or other baked goodies) and heading down to the river to eat. It’s always a nice buzzing atmosphere here!
The Redwood Forest
If you’re planning a visit to Warburton or the Rainforest Gallery, I highly recommend you make time to visit the Redwood Forest nearby. It’s an unbelievably stunning forest, home to the famous Californian Redwood Trees. After an incredible trip to Rotorua, I’ve had seeing Redwood trees again on my bucket-list. I’ve written a short guide on the Redwood Forests and everything you need to know to have a great time here.
