Visiting the Lancelin Sand Dunes in Perth WA

The Lancelin Sand Dunes are 90 minutes north of Perth and is a must-do if you’re looking for a unique experience in Western Australia. Spanning several kilometres, these massive white sand dunes offer stunning views and fun activities! I went to the Lancelin Sand Dunes during a day trip from Perth to the Pinnacles. It was our first main stop on the tour and was so fun! Here are some of the things you can do at the Lancelin Sand Dunes and why it’s something to consider whilst visiting this part of the country.

For anyone looking to do this trip on a tour, this is the specific one I did and I had the best time!! A day of sand-boarding on the dunes, stargazing, the Pinnacles and a BBQ dinner in the desert.

What to Do in Lancelin Sand Dunes

Sand-boarding

The main things to do at the Lancelin Sand Dunes is sand-boarding. Similar to snowboarding but on sand, this activity involves sliding down the dunes on a specially designed board. Boards can be rented from nearby vendors in the town of Lancelin or directly at the dunes. These were provided for us during our day trip tour so I can’t comment personally on renting the boards. I believe boards can be rented for $10 an hour, between 10am-3pm. Check out the Lancelin site for more detailed information on renting boards if you’re doing this without a tour.

I was a bit nervous about doing this but the powdery sand, mixed with the varying heights of the dunes, made it suitable for anyone! I chose the small dunes, whilst others in the group chose the larger, steeper areas. For the sand-boarding, it’s best to bring sunglasses or goggles to protect your eyes from the glare and flying sand. Be sure to also bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as the dunes can get very hot, especially during the summer months.

Off-Roading and Four-Wheel Driving

For those with a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, the Lancelin Sand Dunes offer an exciting opportunity to test your off-roading skills. The dunes’ varied terrain provides a challenge for both novice and experienced drivers. Make sure your vehicle is equipped for sand driving, and always deflate your tyres to the recommended pressure for better traction.

Photography

This area is a fantastic place for photographers! The pristine white dunes against the bright blue sky create stunning backdrops. Near to the dunes, is the Lancelin Lookout and a beach. These are also great to check out if you want to capture the landscape of the area.

Picnics and Relaxation

For those seeking a quieter experience, the dunes also offer space to relax and take in the scenery. Bring a picnic and enjoy the peaceful surroundings! The little town nearby have shops like IGA and cafes, where you can buy food to take with you. Be sure to bring all your litter with you!!
